Moving to London

So, you’ve decided to move to the UK, parties, travelling and many adventures are ahead of you. But, before you get to all of that, there are the more mundane issues to consider. What visa will you require?  Where will you live?  How will you find a job?

If you are more interested in fun than filling out forms, perhaps we can help. With our specialised knowledge and industry contacts our aim is to provide a comprehensive service, covering everything from visa application to providing a variety of employment and accommodation options.

This article will explain for you the initial steps you need to take to turn your dream trip into a reality, as well as recommending how our tailor made products can best assist you.

Starting with the most important requirement, let’s look at the visa. Applying for your UK visa is not as complicated as you may imagine. However, it is worth noting that approximately 40 % of applications are declined each year, with the majority of these unsuccessful applications being attributed to totally preventable errors on the application form.

You should also be aware at this point of the significance of correctly co-coordinating your visa application with your flights and arrival dates.  It is important to begin the process with your visa application before booking flights, as any error on the visa application could result in a flight delay or even cancellation. To ensure that you are not a victim of “bad planning” please sees our visa guarantee service.

So, now we have successfully applied for your visa and assisted you in obtaining the best flights for your trip. What next?

Unfortunately, most of you are going to have to work to fund your travels. BUT working can be fun too! Our goal is to make the transition into employment in the U.K as painless, and hopefully as enjoyable, as possible. Most newcomers to the UK tend to face similar obstacles in their hunt for employment, with the majority only receiving their first pay check in 6 – 8 weeks after arrival. We provide the opportunity to walk into a position, giving you the chance to prove yourself to your new employee and potentially create more rewarding opportunities for yourself. The sky’s the limit!

As part of our employment service we can provide you with a pre departure job offer in a 5* London Hotel. If you are a sports fan what better way to make some money than by the once in a lifetime opportunity of working at the London 2012 Olympics with us, or working in hospitality at one of the many other sporting events across the capital. Perhaps you prefer a more 9-5 job, then we will happily assist you in finding a suitable admin position. Talk to us about our interactive job board, there’s not much that we can’t do!

Like many would be travellers I’m sure you are wondering just how much cash is enough to take with you. The British High Commission website recommends that you budget for £250 a week for living expenses, add £200 on the top of this and you would be working with a realistic budget. The BHC does not, however factor in the extra sterling you will surely need for all the those pubs and parties you have heard so much about, and which will prove difficult to avoid during the excitement of your first few months in the capital.

If you do choose to arrive in the UK without secured employment then we strongly recommend that you follow the guidelines above and aim to have a minimum of $3000 upon arrival. Do not become a statistic and join the “couldn’t hack London” crew by spending like a kiddie in a sweetshop when you first arrive only to find yourself broke, jobless and homeless a few months down the road. This may sound like an extreme scenario, but it is the reality of many who get sucked into the London lifestyle uninformed and unprepared. It is a lonely plane journey home.

Opting to take advantage of our pre-departure job offer can immediately alleviate any concerns you may have regarding cash-flow. The Working Holiday Club can offer a range of employment options, starting from the first week you arrive if you so choose. You can afford to bring a little less saving with you and financial security can be guaranteed.

Although there is generally a greater demand for some professional positions within the teaching, medical and IT fields, with specialist agencies dedicated to these industries, it can still be difficult to secure this type of job before arriving in the country. If you are planning on working within these professions make allowances for the time it will take to meet employment agencies, go for interviews and lastly wait for that first pay packet!

Permanent positions can be difficult to secure if you are planning on working on the Tier 5 VISA, as it restricts you to 24 mouths only. If you are one of the lucky few who qualifies for an Ancestral visa, you will find permanent positions more available to you.

Trade jobs and construction workers also need to remember to factor in the OFFSITE time spent waiting for yourCSCS card . Why not try something completely different in the meantime, guaranteeing that you have money coming in straight away. Talk to us about securing an entry level position before you leave, take away the money worry, maybe you’ll decide working within a nice cosy hotel is more fun than an ice cold building site!

For school leavers and people with limited work experience the competition for entry-level jobs is tough, with thousands of people arriving from all over the world competing for the same types of jobs. Entry level jobs or “interview today and start tomorrow” type jobs generally pay min wage and you will be very fortunate if you find this type of work within a limited time period.

When contacting recruitment agencies directly in the UK, be aware that recruitment agents often advertise work to fill their books with candidates, when in fact, there is no work immediately available. If you are not careful you can find yourself registering with far too many agencies wasting precious earning time. The Working Holiday Club can arrange this type of job for you before you go, and our employment partners are currently paying almost £1 per hour more that the average entry level catering job.  A recent survey on Gumtree revealed the average bar/hospitality job advert receives as many as 400-500 applicants. Let us help you put yourself in the front of the queue.

Of course, accommodation. Is going to be an important consideration, everyone wants somewhere nice to live. To secure a room in London you will be required to provide documentation and be credit checked to prove you can afford to rent the room for the duration of the contract. Typically, you can be asked to provide a combination of work references, bank statements and previous tenant references. If you are not able to provide the requested documents, you may spend some time searching for suitable accommodation. For newcomers to the UK looking to rent and who have no letting references or credit rating, all is not lost as there are solutions. One option is to accept the large letting agent fees and hope you get lucky or the other option is to look at the Jumpstart Premium and see how we can find your accommodation for you.
